Inhalt des Workshops: How do you start a sensible conversation at a conference dinner? How can you illustrate your social competence in a job interview? How can you use language to build and maintain good relationships with the members of your research group or your fellow employees? These and other related questions will be addressed in a series of three workshops on small talk presented by the language centre on 22 November, 29 November and 6 December.
In spite of its name, small talk plays an important role in human interaction. Phatic communication helps us to negotiate and manage our roles in social groups. However, using one’s second language for social purposes can be quite daunting, because traditional language teaching often does not pay sufficient attention to this important aspect of communication. The result is often that second language speakers of English avoid or limit their social interaction in academic and professional settings in which English is used. At best, they might have the courage to simply blindly talk their way through social situations, while trying their utmost to manage feelings of discomfort that may arise from doing so.
The series of three workshops presented by the language centre offers participants the opportunity to gain confidence in using small talk in academic and professional settings by introducing them to: • ways of establishing contact, • politeness strategies in English, • ways of coping with a breakdown in communication in social settings and • important linguistic and cultural aspects involved in maintaining good relationships.
Participants will also be given ample opportunity to practice small talk in a series of role plays related to social interactions that commonly occur in academic and professional contexts.
The workshops will be held from 14:00 – 17:00 on Friday, 22 November, 29 November and 6 December. A maximum number of 10 participants will be admitted. It is strongly advised that participants have at least an intermediate competence level in English. |
