Family/Children

Many guest scholars come with their families. The management of the guesthouse tries to create a pleasant living atmosphere and to meet the special needs of families with children.

Even if you do not live in the University of Osnabrück’s guesthouse, families with children are advised to contact the International Office well before their departure. They will be glad to help you and advise on kindergarten places, etc.

Childcare and schooling

Children may attend kindergarten from the age of three. Nurseries for children under three do exist but places are few and far between and waiting lists are long. Fees for kindergartens and nurseries are usually income-related. An overview of kindergartens in Osnabrück in available on the internet.

In Germany, children aged six and above are subject to compulsory schooling. Public schools are free of charge. School classes are usually given in the mornings. There are child care centers, that are affiliated to schools and look after children in the afternoons (Kinderhorte). But these are subject to fees.
