Health Insurance

Please be aware that you must have a health insurance policy during your stay in Germany.

Germany has signed public health insurance agreements with some countries, including the EU member states. This means that you can retain your own health insurance without having to take out additional insurance in Germany. Before your departure, check with your insurance company at home to find out if your country has a health insurance agreement with Germany and, if so, how much coverage you have.

For citizens of other countries without health insurance agreements, we recommend that you purchase travel insurance from a private company, which will cover you during your first weeks in Germany. After arriving in Germany, you can take out a German health insurance policy that will cover you for the duration of your stay.
It must include unlimited coverage in the case of illness and dental treatment. It is also necessary to present proof that you are adequately insured when you apply for a residence permit.

You may choose between a public and a private health insurance company. If you come to Osnabrück with an employment contract, you will probably have to take out a policy with a public company (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung).

We also strongly recommend that you acquire personal liability and accident insurance policies from a private company. If you have any questions, the International Office will be happy to advise you.
