Cost of living

You will need about 660 Euro per month to cover the cost of living and studying in Osnabrück.

Approximate basic expenses:

  • books, copies, and other materials:  25 - 50 Euro per month
  • rent:  150 - 225 Euro per month
  • health insurance:   approx. 78 Euro per month
  • food: The student cafeterias (Mensa), run by the Studentenwerk Osnabrück, offer low-cost menus (each about 3 Euro a day).
    An additional 75 - 130 Euro per month for meals at home.
  • semester fee for the winter semester 2013/14: 276.15 Euro per semester for degree-seeking German and international students (or 201.15 Euro per semester for students from partner universities and international scholarship recipients (with scholarships which are mainly paid out of German public funds)
  • study fee: 500 Euro per semester (not for exchange students and PhD students)
  • residence permit (usually valid for two years): approx. 110 Euro (extension: 30 Euro)
  • housing deposit: Normally, you must pay a deposit for an apartment or room, which will be returned to you when you move out. Private rooms or apartments usually require a deposit of three months’ rent. Student dormitories require a deposit of 250 Euro for a room and 500 Euro for an apartment. Students in exchange programs must put down a deposit of 400 Euro.
