The University of Osnabrück offers Diplom programs in business, mathematics, the natural sciences, and psychology. The normal period of study, including the examination period, is nine semesters.
Diplom programs are divided into a four-semester basic cycle and a five-semester advanced cycle. During the basic cycle, students learn specific subject-related methods and necessary fundamental knowledge, which are expanded during the advanced cycle with theory and praxis. During the advanced semesters, more knowledge is acquired in one or more specialized areas.
In order to advance from the basic to the advanced cycle, students must pass a Diplom pre-exam. The Diplom examination at the end of the program consists of a final paper, in which a selected theme is treated within a limited period of time (between six and twelve months, depending upon the subject). Students must also pass oral and other written tests.
