Health Insurance

All students in Germany, both foreign and German, must have health insurance. This rule is valid until your 30th birthday or the beginning of your 14th semester, whichever comes first. Students in doctoral programs are exempt.

When you register/enroll at the university, your must provide proof that you have health insurance. You may not register without it.

Please purchase health insurance shortly after you arrive in Osnabrück. You must bring your admission letter from the university when you register at your insurer. Bring your membership confirmation to the Admissions Office (Studierendensekretariat) when you register.

You can also take out health insurance during Welcome Week.

Student Insurance >
There are special rates for student health insurance. All of the public insurers offer insurance to students under 30 at a monthly rate of approx. 78 Euro.

Agreements with Foreign Countries > Germany has insurance agreements with a number of countries. Most are European Union (EU) countries, but some other countries are also included. Insurance policies from these countries are accepted in Germany. Students can keep their own insurance and are not obligated to pay any insurance fees in Germany. Under certain circumstances, students who are privately insured in their own countries are not required to purchase insurance in Germany..

Please be aware that in some cases, not all of the costs for treatment in Germany will be covered by your insurance at home. Therefore, you should check with your insurer at home to find out which services are covered in Germany.

At registration at the university, every student is required to provide a statement from a state health insurance company (e.g. AOK or TK). You can get this document when you provide them with proof that you are insured in your own country. At the health insurance company, you will receive a form, depending upon which country you come from, which must be filled out by your own insurer.

Citizens of EU member countries show their European Health Insurance Card EHIC.

Currently, Germany also has insurance agreements with other countries. Please get in touch with your health insurance company in your home country in order to find out if this is also the case with your home country. If yes, please also ask your health insurance company which documents you will need from them for your stay in Germany.
