What is ERASMUS?

Since 1987, ERASMUS has been supporting mobility among students and teachers. The supportive framework is made up of European partnership programs on the university or school level. In 2007, the ERASMUS program was expanded. Under the name of "Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP)", it now also covers non-university areas of education. The name ERASMUS was kept for the university branch of the program. The ERASMUS program has become an important driving force behind European university partnerships, especially for student exchanges. Over one million students have in the meantime participated in the program, which allows them to acquire not only expertise in their subject but also life experience through an integrated study program abroad. Today, ERASMUS supports almost 90% of German students abroad in Europe.
Besides student mobility, ERASMUS also makes it possible for instructors to teach abroad. Above and beyond providing individuals with financial support, ERASMUS also sponsors activities that contribute to the internationalization of universities, such as the development of common course offerings.

The SOCRATES/ERASMUS program supports:

  • study abroad lasting from three to twelve months
  • internship lasting from three to twelve months
  • short-term positions for instructors (one to six weeks)
  • staff mobility in universities or enterprises (one to six weeks)
  • multinational intensive courses for students (two to six weeks)
  • cooperative development of course offerings at various levels of education
  • preparatory visits to potential partner institutions
  • dissemination of results of cooperative course offerings
  • thematic networks

The International Office supports Schools and Departments in building inter-institutional partnerships. Please contact our ERASMUS office (ERASMUS-Büro); we will be glad to assist you.
