| Beschreibung: | In the first part of the talk, an introduction was made to the importance of plant products in modern medicine and the concepts of Ayurveda, an alternative system of medicine, practiced in India, since the past more than 5000 years. An overview of the use of plants in Ayurveda, including medicinal properties of spices was given. In the second part of this talk, details of some more Indian spices and the plants of Ayurveda would be presented. The use of Indian medicinal plants as the health supplement has been growing. However, the use of these plants for medical/clinical applications would be subjected to further rigorous evaluations. An outline of such efforts to translate the basic observations into clinical practice would be made. The plant extracts or purified compounds, with the proven ability of medicinal properties, have to be tested further with laboratory animals, to validate the effect as well as to ensure the absence of any toxicity. Subsequent trials would be extended to clinical evaluation using human volunteers. Only after rigorous tests at several levels, the compounds/formulations can be released for clinical use by patients. The details of a few less-known/underexploited medicinal plants would be described. The need for conservation, and controlled exploitation of medicinal plants would be emphasized, highlighting the important geographic areas of biodiversity, hot spots and sacred groves in India. |
