Residence Permit and Registration

Registration at your new place of residence
Both foreigners and Germans have to register at their new place of residence within a week. For this, you have to visit the Registration Office (Meldeamt) or the Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Office) at your place of residence in Germany.

Residence permit
Various factors determine whether or not you will need a residence permit.
EU-citizens do no need a residence permit.
Other foreigners have to apply for a residence permit if they wish to stay over three months. A visa is sufficient if your stay does not exceed the duration of your visa.
Even if you were permitted to enter Germany without a visa you will have to ask for a residence permit if you stay for longer than three months. You will have to contact the Ausländerbehörde of your place of residence in Germany.

Required documents
In order to apply for a residence permit you will need:

· your passport
· a passport-sized biometrical photo
· evidence of financial support
· proof of health insurance
· work contract or invitation as a guest professor to the university
