Short-term Study (Kurzzeitstudium)

As a rule, students complete a program by earning a degree. If however, you plan to only spend a semester or two in Osnabrück without earning a degree, you can apply for short-term study (Kurzzeitstudium). In this case, you study for only one or two semesters, and are not permitted to take final exams in Osnabrück. However, as a participant in the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) program, you can earn credits for your work, which can be accepted in your own country.

Short-term students usually come from partner universities or are grant recipients who only plan to study for a short period of time. If you come from a partner university or are part of an exchange program, there are special conditions for you. Please see our special website for exchange students.

However, it is also possible for students from foreign universities, which are not partner universities, to apply for short-term study. If you do not want to earn a degree from the University of Osnabrück, but would prefer to study here for a maximum of two semesters, please check the box on your admissions application form labeled ”Kein formeller Studienabschluss" / "no formal degree".

Please make sure to first obtain information about the programs we offer. Even short-term students must decide which subjects they would like to major in, since students can only enroll in programs of study.

Requirements > You must also fulfil the admission requirements for short-term study. You will need the equivalent of a German Abitur (secondary school degree) and sufficient knowledge of German - you must prove that your German language skills are at least on the level B2. Your documents may not be older than one year. For special programs of study, you will also need some knowledge of English or other foreign languages. Additionally, you must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (calculated according to the German grade point system) in order to be admitted for short-term study.

To apply for short-term study, non-EU applicants send their application to uni-assist by June 15 for a winter semester and by January 15 for a summer semester, EU applicants apply to the University of Osnabrück until July 15 (winter semester) or January 15 (summer semester.
