Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees
Bachelor programs last six semesters and give students the scientific fundamentals that will prepare them for a complex professional or academic career. Students can leave the University of Osnabrück with a professional degree after six semesters, or they can continue their studies.
The academic title Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) will be awarded in humanities; the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in the natural sciences, mathematics, and information science; the Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) in law. In the sixth semester, students must write a Bachelor’s thesis. Bachelor’s and Master’s programs often require more than one language. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is used to evaluate students’ work; this system is in accordance with other systems in various countries.
Master’s Degree
Students continuing their studies after completing a Bachelor’s degree can enter what is usually a four-semester Master’s program in order to obtain more knowledge in specialized areas of their subject(s). A Master’s program places more emphasis on research than does a Bachelor’s, and is meant for students who have a stronger academic interest in their subject(s). Like the Bachelor’s degree, the title of Master of Arts is awarded to students in the humanities, and students of the natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science will earn the title of Master of Science (M.Sc.). To finish their program, students will write a Master’s thesis in either the third or fourth semester.
