Terms and Conditions

This document lists the requirements for foreign language courses offered at the Language Center:

  • Please register online using Stud.IP before the end of the registration period.

  • Once you have registered online, the allocation of places in courses takes place on a first-come, first-served basis, and you will be given the status “provisionally registered”.

  • Multiple registrations for different courses of the same course type (parallel courses) are not admissible.

  • After regular and successful participation in a course, participants shall receive their course credits on their transcript of records through HISinOne.

  • Language courses at level A1 may as a rule only be attended if the prospective participant has no prior knowledge (level A1) of the target language.

  • If you have any questions regarding the accreditation of language courses to the “professional skills development area” of your studies, please address them to the relevant professional skills development office (KoPro).

  • You are usually required to pay a one-time registration fee to participate in a language course offered by the Language Center. Students enrolled at Osnabrück University are required to make a single payment of €20 per person for a course consisting of 2 contact hours per week, and €40 per person for a course with 4 contact hours per week. Staff at Osnabrück University and students enrolled in other universities are required to make a single payment of €80 per person for a course consisting of 2 contact hours per week, and €110 per person for a course with 4 contact hours per week upon enrollment.

  • No registration fee is payable for courses in German as a Foreign Language.

  • Payment shall be made by bank transfer. Your bank account details should be entered into Stud.IP before your registration to a language course.  The registration fee will as a rule be booked off your account approx. 3 to 4 weeks after the start of the course, unless you deregister from the course in accordance with Section 6.

  • During the registration period, participants may as a rule deregister themselves from courses. Subsequently, deregistration is only possible under the conditions outlined in Section 6.

  • Changing to a different course is admissible, as long as the number of course participants is not exceeded.

  • Registration and deregistration after the registration deadline has passed and changing courses is only possible by email to the Language Center.

 

Section 1 Registration Process
(1) Registrations may in principle only be made via Stud.IP and within the registration period specified in the course description. After the registration period has expired, personal or email registrations will only be accepted by the Language Center in exceptional cases.
(2) Registration by telephone is not admissible.

Section 2 Allocation of Places in Courses
(1) Registration of persons with the category “provisionally accepted” usually result in a secure place in a course. Exceptions may occur when e.g. a course is canceled because there are too few registrations, or if a prospective participant has enrolled in multiple parallel courses. In principle, the allocation of places takes place on a first-come, first-served basis according to the timing of online registrations.
(2) Multiple registrations by the same person in different courses of the same course type (parallel courses) is not admissible.

Section 3 Minimum Number of Participants per Course
The number of places in a course is in most cases limited to 25. In some cases, this number may be lower. The minimum number of course participants is five persons.

Section 4 Course Credits
After regular and successful participation in a course, participants shall receive their course credits on their Transcript of Records through HISinOne at the end of the semester. The course credits also contain information about the number of ECTS points the course is worth. Details relating to the number of points that may be awarded may be found under the special information section in the course program.
Language courses at level A1 may as a rule only be attended if the prospective participant has no prior knowledge (level A1) of the target language.

Section 5 Liability for Fees
(1) Participation in language courses offered by the Language Center requires you as a rule to pay a one-time registration fee in accordance with the fee schedule of the Language Center at Osnabrück University. The course registration fee to be paid once only upon registration by students of Osnabrück University is €10 for every contact hour per week. This means that every prospective participant agrees to pay €20 for a course with 2 contact hours per week, and €40 for a course with 4 contact hours per week upon registration. Staff at Osnabrück University and students enrolled in other universities are required to make a payment of €80 for a course consisting of 2 contact hours per week, and €110 for a course with 4 contact hours per week upon registration. No registration fee is payable for courses in German as a Foreign Language. The registration fee is payable upon registration. Payment shall be made by bank transfer. Your bank account details should be entered into Stud.IP before your registration to a language course. Your actual entitlement to participate in a course takes effect upon the granting of the direct debit authorization for the registration fee, provided that the account is properly set up and has sufficient funds.
(2) The registration fee will as a rule be booked off your account approx. 3 to 4 weeks after the start of the course, unless you deregister from the course in accordance with Section 6.
(3) If a course is canceled due to low enrollment or if the instructor is unable to teach the course and a replacement cannot be found, then no fee shall be charged.

Section 6 Withdrawal from Registration and from a Course
(1) During the registration period, participants may as a rule deregister themselves from courses. After this, deregistration is only possible:
for courses taking place during term time by Sunday 12:00 am in week 2 of the University’s teaching term. (This means the first week of teaching at the Language Center);
for other courses up to two days after the start of the course.
Deregistration is only possible by email to the Language Center. In particular, deregistration is not admissible through the course instructors.
(2) Participants may withdraw from their contract for an important reason.
Important reasons include:
(a) a doctor's note which attests a diagnosed, long-lasting illness that specifically prevents the participant from participating in the course.
(b) a document of deregistration for the student from the university,
(c) the documented relocation of residence that makes participation unreasonable,
(d) a significant discrepancy between the course level and the participants' prior knowledge, as determined by the respective course instructor,
(e) cases of exceptional hardship.
The existence of an important reason is determined by the management of the Language Center.
(3) Participants shall submit a reason for their withdrawal by the end of the second week of the course; for cases of exceptional hardship by the end of the first half of the course. If a participant fails to submit a reason by the expiry of the deadline, then withdrawal is no longer possible.

Section 7 Changing Courses
In the cases cited in Section 6 subsection 2 (d), it is possible for a participant to change to another course, as long as the number of participants and/or capacity in accordance with Section 3 allows. Changing courses is only admissible within the first two weeks after a course has commenced and only after consultation with the person responsible at the Language Center.
If a different registration fee applies after a change of courses, the difference shall be paid or will be refunded by the Language Center as appropriate.

Section 8 Data Protection
By registering, the participant agrees to the transfer of personal registration data from Stud.IP to the course provider, the Language Center of Osnabrück University. Registration data consists of the information required by the organizer for course administration and for issuing certificates of participation to course attendees.
