Sexualized Discrimination & Discrimination

The three posters of the campagne are depicted. They show the following messages: "Break the Silence - End the Violence", "Die Scham muss die Seite wechseln - Wir stehen an deiner Seite" ("Shame has to switch sides - We stand by your side") und "Wir dulden keine Belästigung - Achte Grenzen" ("We don't tolerate harassment - respect boundaries")

We pay attention – We listen – We take a stance

Sexualized discrimination and violence remain a taboo subject and are often associated with feelins of shame among the persons affected. One reason for this is that far too often people look the other way leaving those affected responsible for their own protection rather than being able to rely on the courage of the people around them. We want the burden of shame to switch sides and to ensure that boundaries are respected.

With this poster campaign, we want to send a clear message: Osnabrück University has a zero-tolerance policy regarding any form of gender-based violence. We encourage you to look more closely and stand alongside those who are affected. The goal is that the Osnabrück University becomes a place where everyone can feel safe and where mutual respect is actively practiced.

Additionally, we want to use the campaign to draw attention to our support and counselling services. From  studies on gender-based violence we know that only a fraction of the persons affected take advantage of counselling options. We encourage those affected to seek support. The internal and external counsellors offer confidential counselling without any pressure to act in specific ways and inform you extensively about your options for action.

The posters for the campaign were created in cooperation between the Equal Opportunity Representatives of Osnabrück University and the designer, Lieselotte Fritz.

The Three Pillars of the Campaign

Pillar 1: Solidarity and Support : “We listen.”

Message: “Die Scham muss die Seite wechseln – wir stehen an deiner Seite.” (“The shame needs to switch sides – we’re on your side.”)

Content: We as Equal Opportunity Representatives stand in solidarity with the persons affected. Nobody has to deal with harassment on their own. With our counselling, we offer a safer space and professional help without any pressure to act in a certain way. We take the persons affected seriously and support them. It is particularly important to us to make the different options for action clear and to empower those affected to make informed decisions and take action on their own terms.

Pillar 2: Prevention and Protection : “We pay attention.”

Message: “Wir tolerieren keine Belästigung - Achte Grenzen.” (“We don't tolerate harassment - Respect boundaries.”)

Content: With the passing of the guideline against sexualized discrimination, harassment and violence, Osnabrück University has sent a clear message: “We set clear boundaries and have zero tolerance for harassment!” The campaign raises awareness on the extent of gender-based violence to prevent incidents of harassment and violence from being normalized. To realize a campus life without violence we need the commitment and courage of everyone.

Pillar 3: Stance and Protest : “We take a stance.”

Message: „Break the Silence – End the Violence.“

Content: For a campus life without violence, we call on everyone to take action. Civil courage means to pay attention, stand together against violence and take a clear stance. With no other form of violence is blame so directly projected onto the persons affected as it is with sexualized harassment and violence. As Equal Opportunity Representatives, we raise our voices against this injustice and stand in solidarity with those affected.
