An additional four million euros will be allocated, among other things, to the renovation of key departments in the biology department.

Background: In addition to regular construction and renovation funds, the state of Lower Saxony is providing a total of approximately 627 million euros statewide for construction, modernization, and equipment projects. These funds, drawn from the federal government’s special fund, are intended to finance necessary modernization projects at universities. 

“We are very pleased about the new institute building on the Barbarastraße campus for computer science and cognitive science—successful research areas that enjoy a high reputation both nationally and internationally. With the new building, these two academic disciplines will finally once again have adequate facilities, as will our Center for Digital Teaching, Campus Management, and Higher Education Pedagogy, which will also be moving into the building,” explains University President Prof. Dr. Susanne Menzel-Riedl. “Nevertheless, it would have been desirable if the state had also provided funds to demolish the AVZ building, which has stood vacant for a long time. As a university, we have to cover substantial maintenance costs year after year and put up with the sight of this long-abandoned building.”

The university is also pleased with the allocation of approximately four million euros, which is earmarked, among other things, for the renovation of departments in the biology program. “This will further strengthen our globally outstanding position in membrane biology, which has been a flagship research area at our university for many years and, through the Collaborative Research Center and the Center for Cellular Nanoanalytics Osnabrück, has a far-reaching influence on the scientific community,” Menzel-Riedl continued.
