The chair of the Friends’ Association is Renate Scheibe, a retired professor of plant physiology at Osnabrück University and former director of the Botanical Garden. “The Friends Association is committed to providing the Botanical Garden with financial and active support for its projects,” explains the 77-year-old. This is because the university’s base budget is insufficient for many projects and events. For example, the Botanical Garden’s new Mediterranean House would not have been possible without the Friends’ support. The association is also committed to assisting the garden team with special requests and offering a wide range of activities for visitors.
Membership dues from the association’s approximately 250 members form the financial foundation for the Friends’ activities. Thanks to numerous generous donors and contributors, projects are continually made possible that further enrich the garden as an attractive place for education and recreation. Renate Scheibe herself is committed to supporting the Botanical Garden through her own foundation and hopes to attract additional co-donors as well as new association members.
A growing number of volunteers support the garden’s offerings for visitors through their personal dedication at events and at the garden pavilion, which is open on Sundays. Anyone interested in the work of the Friends’ Association is cordially invited to the Helikoniensaal at the Bohnenkamp House on September 17 starting at 4:00 p.m. To help with planning, please register by August 31, 2026.
In addition to a look back, a look ahead, and musical accompaniment, there will be a lecture on biodiversity projects by Prof. Dr. Sabine Zachgo, Director of the Botanical Garden at Osnabrück University. Finally, selected photos from the anniversary photo campaign (submission deadline: September 1, 2026) will be displayed. “We look forward to a lively exchange among old and new friends of the Botanical Garden over refreshments and light bites, which we will serve following the event,” says Renate Scheibe.
