Bonsai Days in the University Botanical Garden

Since 2012, the Bonsai Friends of Osnabrück University have hosted an annual exhibition at the university's Botanical Garden. On May 24 and 25, they are inviting visitors to the Bohnenkamp House and the garden's wintering house, Albrechtstraße 29, from 10 am to 6 pm.

The bonsai friends are supported by the "Freundeskreis Botanischer Garten e.V." and the garden team. For the first time, a taster course for children will be offered as part of the anniversary. In cooperation with the Green School in the Botanical Garden, there will be instructions for children aged 8 to 13 by experienced bonsai enthusiasts. The plant material and necessary accessories are provided by the club. The children can take their first tree and a bonsai guide home with them. The group size is limited to 12 children, the cost contribution is €5 and will be used as a donation. The courses will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 3 to 4.30 pm and Sunday, May 25, from 11 am to 12.30 pm. Please register by May 23rd by emailing the secretary's office at bg-buero@uni-osnabrueck.de or by calling (0541) 969 2739, stating your age.

Bonsai is Japanese and means "tree in a bowl". They can be created from any woody plant and cultivated in a pot; they are not special cultivars. Targeted horticultural measures turn a potentially large tree into a miniature form. This art can be learned by anyone. The appropriate pot is an inseparable part of the overall artwork of a bonsai, like the frame of a picture. The shape, size and color of the pot round off the designed tree. In the exhibition in the Helikoniensaal, the tree is presented on a wooden table and with a "companion plant". Bonsai enthusiasts gain extensive knowledge about the growing conditions of their trees and their natural origin.

The Bonsai Friends Club is pleased to cooperate with the Botanical Garden. The exhibitions have attracted a great deal of attention in the North and West German bonsai scene for many years. The origins of the club lie in the first meetings in 1985 in Voxtrup. In the meantime, the former Trentmann tree nursery has established itself as a meeting place and receives a lot of support there. The members have continuously developed their skills, so that several experienced designers now belong to the club.
