Application via uni-assist

You belong to the group of applicants who must have their applications checked by uni-assist e.V.? In this case, submit your application online via uni-assist. We would like to support you in your application with the information on this page and show you the individual steps in the application process. You will also find a list of frequently asked questions below to help you.

You apply with all your relevant documents (see collecting documents) via My assist / uni-assist. You enter your personal data and information about the degree program you wish to apply for and upload the required documents.

Before you submit your application online, collect all relevant application documents. The uni-assist procedure is a pure online procedure. You only need to upload your documents digitally.

All certificates relevant to the application must be submitted in entirety. This means that (degree) certificates as well as grade and subject overviews (transcripts of records), certificate attachments as well as front and back pages, for double-sided printing, must be uploaded. All components of the individual educational certificates must be present. Please note if there are any country- or certificate-specific requirements for your application that you must follow when submitting.

Upload all relevant language certificates. Please refer to the relevant Regulations on Access and Admission (mostly German) for information on admission and language requirements. Please also refer to the Regulations on Access and Admission to find out whether special documents or the fulfillment of further admission requirements are specified for your desired degree program (e.g. aptitude test).

Documents in foreign languages must be translated into German or English by a translator or institution authorised to make translations under oath or admissible in court. Please upload the documents in the original language in addition to the translation.

A supplementary admission form is available for the Master's Programs in Cognitive Science. Fill it out and upload it to My assist / uni-assist as well.

If you want to apply for an arts or music degree course, remember to register for the aptitude test (in German).

If your certificates are from China, India  or Vietnam, please also upload the APS certificate.

The processing of an application at uni-assist within one semester costs 75 euros for the first study choice and 30 euros for each additional study choice. Your application will only be processed by uni-assist once the fee has been paid. Information on payment options is provided on the uni-assist website.

Uni-assist will pre-check your application documents for the university and inform you of the evaluation result. If all documents are complete and you meet the formal admission requirements, uni-assist will forward your application to Osnabrück University.

The positive evaluation result does not constitute admission! The allocation process takes place within the university. If it is positive, you will receive a letter of admission from the university.

If your documents do not yet meet the formal admission requirements, you will also be informed by uni-assist. You will then have to reapply the following year / semester to study at our university or for the admission test at the preparatory course (Studienkolleg).

If you receive a positive evaluation result from uni-assist and your application is forwarded to Osnabrück University, you can use the evaluation result for your own benefit. Please read how the evaluation result could be helpful for you.

  • Visa: With a positive evaluation result from uni-assist, you can apply for a student applicant visa before receiving admission. The student applicant visa can be converted into a student visa in Osnabrück. Please note that some German diplomatic missions and embassies do not issue student applicant visas. Please contact your local German diplomatic mission or embassy for more information.
  • Housing: Once you have received the positive evaluation result, you can apply to the Studierendenwerk for a place in a student residential complexes. The waiting lists for student residential complexes are long. We therefore recommend that you apply for a place on the waiting list as early as possible. This does not mean that you are making a financial commitment. You can find more information about accommodation on the International Office website.

How long does it take uni-assist to review my application?

The evaluation can take up to eight weeks. Therefore, we recommend you apply early.

Can I submit missing documents to uni-assist?

Yes, you can find information on how to submit missing documents later on the uni-assist website.

I have not yet completed my Bachelor's degree, is it nevertheless possible to apply for the Master's program? Can I apply with a provisional Bachelor's degree certificate?

Under certain conditions, admission to a Master's degree program is also possible if the first university degree has not yet been completed at the time of application, but it is expected that the degree will be awarded during the first Master's semester.

Uni-assist has already forwarded my application to the university. What happens next?

Once uni-assist has forwarded your application to the university, the admission procedure will take place there. Please understand that this may take a few weeks. On our page

Why can I not find my degree program on uni-assist?

There are typically three reasons for this.

  • First: The application process has not yet begun. As long as Osnabrück University has not opened the application procedure, you cannot select the degree program.
  • Second: You have to change the search criteria. Proceed as follows - enter the desired semester, select the Osnabrück University under University, select the degree, click on "search" and select the desired degree program from the list.
  • Third: Have you chosen the right university? There are two universities in Osnabrück. Make sure you select the Osnabrück University under University.

What language requirements do I need to fulfill?

Can I apply with a B2 German certificate?

If you do not hold a recognized C1 German certificate at the time of application, you can apply with a B2 certificate. If your application is successful, you will be admitted to the degree program. However, you must submit a C1 German certificate upon enrollment. Please also read the information on German language proficiency.

Osnabrück University also offers Master's degree programs in English for which you do not need to provide proof of German language skills.

Does Osnabrück University offer degree programs taught in English?

Osnabrück University offers a number of Master's degree programs taught in English for which no knowledge of German is required.

For the Bachelor of Science Cognitive Science, you must provide proof of German language skills at level B1.

For all other Bachelor's degree programs and the Legal State Examination program, you must apply with at least a B2 German certificate. Please also read our information on German language skills.

Which English and other foreign language certificates are recognized?

You can check which foreign language skills and which German language skills you need to provide for your desired degree program in the Regulations on Access and Admission (mostly in German).

I have studied in English; do I still need an English certificate?

In most cases, the completion of degree program taught in English is sufficient proof of English language proficiency. Please note that you must submit proof that English was the language of instruction. This proof mostly is available in the Transcript of Records or the Diploma Supplement.

The selection committee will take the final decision concerning the proof of your English skills. If it decides, that they are not yet sufficient you have time until enrollment to submit a recognized English certificate

My original certificates are issued in English / German, do I still need to have them translated?

In this case, no translation is required.

Is Bachelor's degree eligible for my desired Master's degree program?

This question cannot be answered in advance. The relevant selection committee of the departments reviews the applications for Master's degree programs after a formal preliminary check by uni-assist and the Admissions Office.

Please understand that this process can take several weeks. As soon as the selection committee has made its decision, you will receive a letter of admission or a rejection notification.

Is my final grade (GPA) sufficient for my desired degree program?

At Osnabrück University there are Bachelor's and Master's degree programs with admission restrictions and open admissions.

Open admission means that the grade (GPA) is not relevant for the allocation of study places. If you meet all the formal criteria, you will be awarded a place.

Admission restricted means that the grade (GPA) is decisive for the allocation of study places, in addition to the formal criteria. In this case, a ranking list is drawn up according to grade. The two Master's programs in Psychology are a special case. Points are awarded in this regard. How do I submit my "Declaration that a Master's examination or a comparable examination in a comparable subject area has not been definitively failed or passed and that the right to take the examination has not been lost"?

You do not need to submit a separate declaration. The declaration is automatically requested in the online questionnaire at uni-assist and you must click there that you have not lost your examination entitlement.
