Beschreibung

This seminar critically examines the relationship between space, human mobility and attempts to control this mobility. It introduces students to the notion of the migration / border regime and revisits key geographical perspectives and concepts. The primary thematic focus will lie on border violence and more specifically border deaths and disappearances of migrants and the politics of in/visibilizing these deaths. The readings will take us to various (border) regions, including the Mediterranean Sea, Australia and the US/Mexican border.
The seminar is tailored for master students in geography (WSG) and international migration (IMIB and EuMIGS). Students from other programmes are also welcome to take the seminar as an elective. This is a reading-intensive and discussion-oriented seminar. Students are expected to actively participate in classroom discussions which will be based on readings.
The seminar will be held in English. Students can submit their final papers in English or German.
