Beschreibung

This seminar will be held in English. The three guiding questions that will be addressed are

1. What is the psychological approach to culture and why intercultural psychology matters? We will explore some of the similarities and differences across and within cultures. That is, we will learn about cross-cultural differences and intercultural competences. Alongside cross-cultural differences that effect intercultural relations, we will learn about how and when people identify with a specific culture and how and when that effects intercultural relations, conflict and perceived differences.
2. How are bias and prejudice against outgroups formed and maintained? We will explore different factors leading to negative intergroup attitudes and relations by examining prominent theories and by considering various cognitive and emotional processes that play an important role in the dynamics of intercultural or intergroup relations.
3. Finally, what should (not) be done to foster positive intercultural/intergroup relations? Based on decades of research on intergroup relations, we will see how social psychological knowledge can be used to reduce prejudice and improve intercultural relations. Furthermore, we will discuss major socio-political and socio-psychological barriers to improving intercultural relations in contemporary societies, and think together about what we can do to overcome them.
