Beschreibung

Money is one of the few instruments in the world that everybody uses but few understand its nature. With the onset of the Great Financial Crisis, an interest in the alternative explanations on the nature of money, credit-debt relations and the enormous access global finance gained in our daily lives (the so-called ‘financialization’) has emerged beyond the critical political economy scholarship. This introductory seminar deals with these issues and provides students with alternative ways of thinking about money, debt, and finance. Specifically, we will focus on the following questions:

• What is money and how does it have value? What are the different theories on money?
• How do credit-debt relations play a role in the evolution of capitalist markets and financialization?
• What are the implications of digital currencies for the global financial system?

The seminar is structured into two parts: In the first part, we will be looking at the pluralist theories of money and the emergence of capitalist-credit money. The second part of the seminar is focused on the current developments of credit-debt relations in financial capitalism. Concretely, we will be covering post-structural approaches to global finance, the effects of financialization, and the emergence of digital currencies.

Since the seminar is mainly based on the readings and class discussions, it relies heavily on students’ active participation and engagement. You are all expected to carefully read the assigned texts and outline the main arguments. You are also very much encouraged to use the online tools on Stud.IP (such as ‘Blubber’ or the forum) to continue the class discussions, or to post any relevant information. There are recommended readings for each session. These are not mandatory; however, they can be relevant for you if you plan to write your term paper on the subject or just want to find out more about that particular topic.

More detailed instructions on the presentations and research topics will be discussed during the first class.
