Beschreibung
This course delves into the literary history of economic liberalism and interrogates the powerful attractive pull that liberalist notions of economic freedom and a ‘free market’ have exerted across large parts of the American population since at least the mid-nineteenth century. We explore and discuss the complicated role that American realist literature has played in carving out, negotiating, and contesting these ideas. Students learn about the literary and cultural history of economic liberalism, they revisit and rethink forms and functions of American literary realism, and they enhance their close reading skills and ability to conduct critical textual analyses.
All primary and secondary literature will be announced in class. Note that this course requires students to read several long prose texts over the course of the semester.
