Beschreibung
We are going to read four “Anglo-Indian” novels, that is, novels by English men and women resident in, or visitors, to, colonial India, published from 1872 to 1924. Our primary concern will be the depiction of contacts between native Indians and Europeans, and what they say about prevalent attitudes with regard to the English and Indian cultures:
We are going to read:
Meadows Taylor, Seeta (1872)
Flora Annie Steel, On the Face of the Waters (1896),
Bithia Croker, In Old Madras (1911),
E. M. Forster, A Passage to India (1924), ed. Oliver Stallybrass, Penguin Classics ed.
