Application

The success of your application within the ERASMUS program depends on the agreements that have been signed between your home university and its European partners and the faculties to which these agreements apply. Students should therefore find out which universities their department or institute has signed agreements with. Once you have found a suitable university, you are free to apply.

What requirements do students have to meet?

  • you must be enrolled at Osnabrück University for the entire duration of your stay abroad
  • you must have completed at least two semesters of study before you start your study abroad
  • you must have sufficient time in your "mobility account" for the stay (you are entitled to a maximum of 12 months of time abroad with Erasmus during the bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs respectively)
  • you must have reached the required level of language proficiency agreed with your host university before the start of your stay (please ask the Erasmus departmental coordinator if you are unsure). If you do not yet have the required language skills, you can improve your language proficiency by taking a language course, e.g. at the Osnabrück University Language Center.

Application Deadline

Applications must be submitted at the beginning of each year for the next academic year. As a rule, the date is set based on the application deadline for partner universities at the university level (academic year 2024/25: February 1, 2023). Please contact your ERASMUS departmental coordinator in good time to find out when the application deadline is and what documents you need to submit.

There is no separate application date for stays abroad in the winter or summer semester. As a rule, you will be required to fill out an online application. In addition, you must also submit a paper printout of the online application as well as the written application documents (usually "Application Documents Europe (PDF, 208 kB)") to the relevant ERASMUS coordinator.

Application Process

In order to complete a successful application for an ERASMUS exchange abroad you should complete the following steps:

Collect information about the places available in your school of study:
Theplaces open to students in your school are the result of so-called “inter-institutional agreements” between your school and the relevant partner school at the host university.

Collect information from the ERASMUS coordinator (PDF, 1.31 MB) in your School:
Each school has its own ERASMUS coordinator who processes all ERASMUS applications. Your coordinator will be able to inform you about the various options available to you, provide you with application forms, inform you of deadlines, requirements and selection criteria.

Apply through your ERASMUS coordinator (PDF, 1.31 MB):
Once you have decided which ERASMUS exchange you would like to apply for, you can start the application process. Please take note of any application deadlines which are usually between January and March for the following academic year (winter and summer semester!).

You can get the necessary application forms for your application from your ERASMUS coordinator in your school. If you need, please fill in the standard “Europe” application forms.

In any case, please fill out the online application and issue the paper printout and all other application documents to your coordinator in your school.

Nomination for a place at a host university by the ERASMUS coordinator:
After receiving and reviewing your documents, the ERASMUS coordinator will nominate you for a place at the host university if your application is accepted. The final decision on whether your application has been accepted or rejected lies with the host university and is based on the documents you submit. The host university may request additional documents, which you must submit by the given deadline.
The ERASMUS coordinator in your school forwards the paper printout of the online application to the International Office, which is responsible for the approval and administration of ERASMUS mobility grants.

Selection Criteria

ERASMUS students are selected based on their academic qualifications and their foreign language proficiency. Further criteria include their intended course of study, their level of preparation and the feasibility of their plans.

Learning Agreement

Students who are nominated for the ERASMUS program must sign a declaration of acceptance for the ERASMUS mobility grant, and complete a “Learning Agreement” and submit it to the International Office before they start their stay abroad. The Learning Agreement is a contract between the student, their home university and the host university which sets out the courses the student is to visit during their stay abroad in the context of the ECTS program. This contract ensures that any courses the student takes while abroad can be recognized upon their return to their home university.
