Scholarships and Funding

Students and PhD candidates can apply for a wide range of financial and material support - either through the BAföG (student financing) program or other scholarships and funding programs.

Funding at the University

Every year, Osnabrück University itself offers students the opportunity to apply for a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship, a Niedersachsen scholarship (link will follow soon) and a funding prize (in German).

For Women: Women in the final phase of their PhD are entitled to apply for a scholarship from the dedicated funding pool for women.

For International Students: The International Office awards so-called Ambassador Scholarships to overseas students from partner universities and provides a wide range of detailed information about  scholarships and funding for outgoing and incoming students. The Hilde Domin Programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) serves to support students and doctoral candidates from across the globe, who are at risk of being formally or de facto denied educational or other rights in their country of origin, and to provide these students and doctoral candidates with an opportunity to begin or complete a study or research degree at a higher education institution in Germany. This programme is open to candidates that are still abroad or already in Germany. Candidates have to file application for this programme after being formally nominated by a university.

For Single Parents: Single parents studying at Osnabrück University are entitled to apply for funding through the Madame Courage Osnabrück program run by the charity “The Catholic Women’s Social Service”.

Scholarships for Gifted Students

Classic donor organizations for promoting and supporting gifted students – so-called Begabtenförderungswerke (in German) – such as the Friedrich Ebert Foundation or the Konrad Adenauer Foundation award scholarships on the basis of widely differing criteria. Common criteria are, however, that you have above-average grades, participate in a good cause or charity organisation, are interested in culture or have a religious affiliation. Many such organizations expect their scholarship holders to be involved in the organization and represent its key principles. Potential applicants are advised to research their organization of interest prior to making an application. This initial effort is highly worthwhile, as scholarships need not be repaid. If you have any questions about these donor organizations, you should address them to your contact professor or lecturer at Osnabrück University.

More information and an overview of donor organizations is provided through the StipendiumPlus portal.

Scholarship Databases

The platform european-funding-guide.eu is a good place to start if you are looking for the right scholarship to apply for.

The Deutsche Akademische Auslandsdienst DAAD provides a wide range of information on how to finance a period of study abroad.

You can also use the so-called scholarship guides (in German) provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to find scholarships in Germany and abroad by setting your own search criteria.

e-fellows.net allows you to conduct your search based on target group, stage you are at in your studies, type of scholarship, and many other criteria.
