3rd North German Doctoral Workshop (NDAW)

On April 26 and 27, the 3rd North German Doctoral Workshop in Classical Studies (NDAW) was held in Osnabrück. The aim of the two-day workshop was, on the one hand, to offer doctoral students from the universities of the federal states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein a basis for presenting and discussing individual theses or possible detailed questions relating to their ongoing work in a small group. On the other hand, the NDAW concept offers young researchers from the aforementioned universities a platform to get to know each other, exchange ideas about their research interests and thus build up their own network.

The workshop was opened on the morning of April 26 with welcoming speeches by the Dean of the School of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Andreas Brenne, and Annika Thoma, the representative of promos, the doctoral student representation of Osnabrück University. The core of the two-day workshop consisted of eight presentations by doctoral students on topics from the fields of classical philology, ancient history and archaeology, ranging from archaic Crete to Greece, Rome and Palmyra to the Germanic tribes of the 5th century A.D. Around 20 doctoral students, postdocs and students of ancient studies took part in the discussions.

The program was rounded off by a lecture by Prof. Dr. Christiane Kunst entitled "Die Herkunft von Soldatenfrauen auf römischen Militärdiplomen" on Friday evening and an excursion to the Kalkriese Museum and Park on Saturday afternoon. Many thanks to Susanne Wilbers-Rost and Achim Rost for the lecture and discussion.

The organizers Nicole Diersen and Anna Katharina Romund would also like to thank all participants for the lively discussions on the individual lectures and the fruitful exchange outside the official discussion rounds and thus for two stimulating days in the field of ancient studies.

Launched by Philip Egetenmeier and Veronika Egetenmeyr in Hamburg in 2017 and successfully continued by Antonietta Castiello and Ann-Christine Sander in Oldenburg in 2018, the NDAW was finally established as a tradition in Osnabrück in its third year as a promising format for networking young academics. The next workshop will take place in Kiel in 2020.
