Research usually assumes that cults evoke emotions and thus create community. However, this premise itself is rarely made the subject of analysis. This article attempts to explore the extent to which emotions may have played a role in the anthesteria in order to describe their effect more precisely. In doing so, we must face the methodological challenge of interpreting the sparse, inconclusive source material against the background of current debates on the history of emotions.
