 Prof. Angelos Chaniotis, Princeton

Emotions are spontaneous reactions to external stimuli. Despite their mostly temporary nature, strong emotional reactions are not forgotten. What role does the memory of past individual or collective emotions play? How is this memory actualized and instrumentalized? Using selected texts - especially epigraphic texts from Greece and the Roman East - the world-renowned expert on the history of emotions Angelos Chaniotis will examine the significance of visualized feelings as a means of persuasion and as a founder of "emotional community".
