"The crisis is female. Female scope for action as a subject of crisis management in the crisis of the Roman Republic" as part of the project  "Intervention of women in the crisis of the Roman Republic"

The period from the Punic Wars to the fall of the Republic and its transformation into monarchical rule is characterized by a succession of crises that affected all areas of life. Crises are phases of decision, of potentiality, in which given structures and regulations are called into question or even suspended. In Greco-Roman antiquity, crisis is also a moment for women. This is all the more astonishing as in Greece and Rome, where wars are the main triggers for crises within society, the political stage as well as social and literary life is dominated by men. Crises are therefore situations in which gender relations can be redefined. While the diagnosis of crisis symptoms, especially with regard to their apparent lack of alternatives, has occupied research intensively, the question of crisis management has remained marginal and focused on the institutional level.

The extent to which attempts to end the crisis were also based on women's scope for action was therefore to be investigated in the project "Interventions by women in the crisis of the Roman Republic", which was part of the overarching cooperative project network "The crisis is female".

Dr. Anna Katharina Romund worked on the sub-project as part of her Doctorate. She published her findings in the monograph " Die Krise ist weiblich",  published by Marie Leidorf in September 2023.
