Institute for Art/Art Education

The Institute for Art/Art Education brings together the diverse facets of the visual arts and is distinguished by the interweaving of artistic practice, art and media studies, and art education in its teaching and research. These disciplines are currently represented by the departments of Sculpture/Art in Public Spaces, Time-Based Art, Media and Design, Painting, Graphic Arts, Science of Art with a focus on transculturality and Art Education and Outreach, and are led by six full professors and one adjunct professor. This unique interplay between theory and practice is reflected in the specific profiles of the faculty members, their teaching and research focuses, and the respective modules of all degree programs within the Art/Art Education teaching unit.

In the teaching of artistic practice (sculpture and spatial art, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, media and design, time-based art forms), we offer a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines, studios, and workshops that support the independent development and execution of artistic projects through studio discussions, curated exhibitions, artistic interventions in public or digital spaces, and similar activities.

In art theory, we critically examine works of art, aesthetic and media phenomena; analyze the significance of art within its historical, social, and (trans)cultural contexts; and communicate these insights to an audience.

Art Education develops subject-specific pedagogical concepts and methods based on artistic practices as well as theories from the fields of education, art, and media studies. Through internships and collaboration with cultural and educational institutions, students are prepared for careers in the arts, culture, and education—both in and out of school—through project-based outreach formats.

The Institute for Art/Art Education offers a wide range of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. At the bachelor’s level, the teacher-training-oriented dual-subject bachelor’s program (B.A.) and the bachelor’s program in Education, Upbringing, and Instruction (B.A.) are each offered as dual-subject bachelor’s tracks. In addition, the two-subject Bachelor’s program (B.A.) in extracurricular art education is offered; this program leads to professional certification and provides the opportunity to pursue a specialized Master’s degree in Art and Communication. The subject of Art/Art Education can be studied as a major, core subject, or minor. At the master’s level, the program offerings include Teacher Education for High Schools (M.Ed.), Teacher Education for Elementary Schools (M.Ed.), Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (M.Ed.), and the single-subject master’s program “Art and Communication” (M.A.).
