Theses

Depending on the examination regulations, different requirements must be met to register for a bachelor’s thesis or a master’s thesis. To register for a bachelor’s thesis, students must generally have earned at least 120 LP, and for a master’s thesis, at least 80 LP. If the master’s thesis is in the field of Art/Art Education, the corresponding master’s colloquium must be completed beforehand.

In the dual-major bachelor’s program, the thesis is written either in the major of your degree program or in a core subject of your choice.

In the Master’s program in Art and Communication, the thesis is generally written on an artistic or subject-specific topic.

In the Master of Education program, you also have the option of writing your thesis either in your major, a core subject, or in a topic related to pedagogy or educational science.

How does the thesis process work, and how do I register it?
First, you’ll come up with one or a few possible topics for your thesis and approach your primary and secondary advisors.
It’s best to start this planning process about half a year before you plan to register. Once the topic has been finalized and both examiners have agreed to supervise, submit the official  application to the Registrar’s Office.

How do I select a primary and secondary thesis advisor?
The thesis is supervised by two advisors. At least one of them must be a full-time faculty member, hold a professorship, or be habilitated, and must be affiliated with the Institute of Art/Art Education. Depending on the chosen topic, the thesis may also be supervised by a maximum of one person from another discipline.
Please note that you are not entitled to write your thesis in your preferred subject area, and that faculty members are generally limited to supervising only a certain number of theses per semester. Therefore, especially if you have clear preferences regarding examiners, it is recommended that you consult with them early on and clarify possible timeframes for completing the thesis.
Under  “People,” you will find an overview of the professors and research assistants at the Institute of Art/Art Education whom you can request as first and second examiners.

What formal requirements do I need to follow?
The formal requirements for theses are determined in consultation with the respective examiners. The  guide from the social sciences (PDF) also provides some initial guidance.
In addition, a declaration of originality must be included with the thesis. General information about the final examination can also be found under  “Exams.”

How much time do I have for my thesis?
Bachelor’s thesis: 3 months
; Master’s thesis (Master of Education): 4 months

Master’s thesis (Master of Arts): 5 months

Can I extend the deadline for my thesis?
Under certain circumstances, it is possible to extend the completion period by up to one month. Students should contact the Examinations Office in a timely manner to request an extension.
