Multiprotein complexes governing chlorophyll biosynthesis: Dmitry Shvarev heads new junior research group

The Biology department is pleased to welcome a new principal investigator: Dr. Dmitry Shvarev will head the junior research group “Structural Biology of Photosynthetic Microorganisms“, funded by the DFG's Emmy Noether Programme

Dmitry Shvarev has previously conducted research as a postdoc in the Structural Biology division (headed by Prof. Dr. Arne Möller). His aim is to understand the function of multiprotein complexes that control and regulate chlorophyll biosynthesis.

„Engaging, inspiring, motivating“: International Symposium on Biomembranes at Osnabrück University

From 26 to 28 August 2026, the international symposium “Spatial-temporal interrogation of living membranes” was held at the Biology department in Osnabrück. It was organised by Research Training Group 2900 in collaboration with the Summer School of the MemBioMed Master’s program.

17 students from 14 countries: Osnabrück University welcomes first cohort of students in the international MemBioMed Master's program

They are studying membrane biology at three locations in Europe: After spending time in Nice and Genoa, participants in the MemBioMed program will now spend a semester in Osnabrück. The program kicks off with a summer school featuring an international symposium.

Neighborly help: Soil bacteria provide nutrients to one another

A study by the Ecology division, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Cambridge, shows that soil bacteria live in beneficial communities and frequently exchange nutrients with one another. It has been published in „Nature Microbiology“.

Osnabrück University mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Wilfried Westheide

The University mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Wilfried Westheide, who passed away on 27 July 2026. He served as Professor of Special Zoology at Osnabrück University in the School of Biology/Chemistry from 1983 to 2003.
