Assignment of places for theses, seminars, and projects

  • Theses (Bachelor's and Master's theses) are allocated centrally via an allocation procedure:

  • Current information on planned/ongoing allocation procedures can be found under  Current news.
  • The allocation procedure for a thesis is open to:
students on the Bachelor's degree program in Business Administration and Economics,
students in the core subject of Economics on the dual-subject Bachelor's degree program,
students on the Master's degree programs in Business Administration and Economics,
students on the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Information Systems.
  • Places for final theses are awarded twice a year: In January/February for the summer semester (i.e. for thesis periods starting between April and September) and in June/July for the winter semester (i.e. for thesis periods starting between October and March). You can find out the exact dates on the homepage of the Examinations Office under  Current Notifications. The link for the application procedure is also displayed there.
  • After the application deadline, places are allocated first according to the stated priorities and within the priorities according to the average grade achieved. Furthermore, the capacities of the departments are taken into account. In the allocation procedure for Master's theses, there are also additional allocation criteria for the individual subject areas.
  • Students on the Master's degree programs in Business Administration, Economics and Information Systems are only admitted to the Master's thesis if they can provide evidence of at least 60 credit points and have fulfilled any admission requirements.
  • Students on the Bachelor's degree programs in Business Administration and Economics and Information Systems are only admitted to the Bachelor's thesis in accordance with the examination regulations (Section 12 (12)) if they can prove that they have at least 120 credit points at the time of registration (= start of the processing period).
  • For the central allocation procedure, this means:
    (1) Students who do not yet meet the registration requirements at the time of application for a Bachelor's thesis in Business Administration and Economics or Information Systems may also participate in the allocation procedure. However, if they have earned fewer than 110 credit points in the semester of application, they will be given lower priority in the allocation procedure.
    (2) The preferences of Master's students are given priority in the allocation procedure relative to those of Bachelor's students. The aim is for a maximum of 5% of students applying for a Master's thesis to be allocated a lottery place.
  • Students on Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Information Systems can only be supervised for their theses by the Information Systems departments.
  • Information on the modalities of supervision and examination by the department in which you are writing your thesis can be found on the respective websites.
  • After the application deadline, the allocation of places for Bachelor's theses is shown directly in the application form. The departments will inform you about the allocation of places for Master's theses.
  • You are only entitled to a place if you have applied in the allocation procedure by the deadline. Students who have missed the first deadline or wish to return their allocated place can apply for a place in the  succession procedure.
  • Once the places have been allocated and announced, the start date for your thesis will be determined in consultation with the supervising department. The regulations stipulated by the department apply. The earliest possible starting date is two weeks after the announcement of the allocation, the latest possible date is the end of the semester to which the procedure relates.
  • In order to start your thesis, you must submit an  application for admission to (PDF, 189 kB) the Examinations Office and submit the so-called "  Laufzettel (PDF, 737 kB) " (to be completed on the computer only) from the Examinations Office to the department. The department formulates the topic, sets a start date in consultation with you and forwards the routing slip to the Examinations Office. The Examinations Office grants admission to the thesis. The letter of admission contains the topic, the submission date and a link to the declaration of honor, which must be inserted and signed at the end of the thesis.
You must confirm receipt of the email immediately so that the thesis registration can be recorded in the examination management software (EXA). Without a timely confirmation, your topic will expire.

Places will be allocated after the application deadline for a thesis. Applications received too late cannot be considered. If you have missed the application deadline, please write an e-mail to the Examinations Office with the following information:
Name, matriculation number, degree program, number of subject and semester, current credit points achieved. Incomplete messages will not be considered.
Based on your complete message, you will be placed on a list of successors. There is only one list for all Business Administration and Economics degree programs (Bachelor and Master).

In the event that you have applied in time and received a place, but do not wish to take up the place allocated to you, please inform both the department and the Examinations Office within 14 days. The Examinations Office will then place you on the list of successors and allocate the place elsewhere. If you do not return the topic until after the 14-day deadline has expired, you will not be included on the list of successors. If you do not make use of an allocated place and do not want to write your thesis until a semester later, please also notify the Examinations Office immediately. Please note that in this case you will have to participate again in the allocation procedure for the later semester.

Places are allocated to students on the list of late applicants that either remain free after the regular allocation for a subject area or have become free due to the withdrawal of another (regularly registered) student. Under no circumstances are late applicants entitled to a place. The entitlement arises exclusively through timely registration for a regular allocation date.

The order on the list of late applicants is determined by the order in which the applications are received. Late applications and returned places are treated equally. When places become available, the Examinations Office will send you a list of the subject areas that still have places available or have places available again. You must reply to the message from the Examinations Office within 24 hours (the time stamp of the e-mail from the Examinations Office applies). In your reply, please provide a complete preference list of all subject areas on offer. The Examinations Office will then assign you a subject area. If you return the place allocated in this way, you will not be considered for any further places in the succession procedure.
