Beschreibung:
Lecturer: Dr. Debbie Coetzee-Lachmann, Smart Communication – Training and Consulting, Osnabrück
has more than twenty years’ experience in teaching business and academic English to students and professionals in South Africa, Belgium and Germany. As language and communication trainer and consultant, her work focuses on the challenges we face in terms of our communication and interaction in multicultural and multilingual academic and professional settings.

Content:
How do you start a sensible conversation at a conference dinner? How can you illustrate your social competence in a job interview? How can you use language to build and maintain good relationships with the members of your research group or your fellow employees? These and other related questions will be addressed in this workshop on small talk, because in spite of its name, small talk plays a big role in human interaction. It helps us establish and negotiate social roles and connect to people to form networks. These networks range from deep and life-long friendships to project-based work teams. Whatever the aim and nature of the networks, we need them to get things done and meet our need for social interaction and a sense of belonging.

The workshop offers participants the opportunity to gain confidence in using small talk to build and strengthen relationships in academic and professional settings. Paying attention to cultural, social and psychological aspects, the workshop introduces participants to ways of:
• establishing concact,
• ending current or regular contact in constructive ways,
• strengthening relationships through small talk,
• being polite in English,
• coping with communication breakdown in small talk settings

Participants will be given ample opportunity to practice small talk in a series of role plays related to social interactions that commonly occur in academic and professional contexts.

Please note: Participants should have at least an intermediate competence level in English.
