Lecturer:
Dr. Debbie Coetzee-Lachmann
has more than twenty years’ experience in teaching business and academic English to students and professionals in South Africa, Belgium and Germany. Between June 2007 and July 2016 she held the position as head of the language center at the university, before changing to a position in the university’s division for staff and organizational development where she is responsible for international members of staff. As language and communication trainer and consultant, her work focuses on the challenges we face in terms of our communication and interaction in multicultural and multilingual academic and professional settings.

Have you ever experienced the frustration in a team led by a boss that gives instructions that are hard to understand and feedback that is even harder to swallow? Have you yourself ever held a leadership position and had to face the challenge of talking people out of a state of fear, frustration or resistance or deal with an aggressive and public attack on a statement you have made?
A leadership position makes high demands on a person’s communication skills. To illustrate: One has to communicate goals, expectations and procedures in clear and comprehensible terms and use language effectively in order to inspire, motivate, express understanding and empathy, draw attention, warn and discipline. One’s language use as a leader also conveys messages about one’s values, attitudes and one’s perception of leadership and thus influences the ways in which one is perceived in this specific role.
Leaders and people with leadership ambitions must therefore be highly aware of their own language use and be able to adapt their communication in accordance with the requirements of the situations they face.
This workshops offers you the opportunity to practice your English for a set of communicative tasks that leaders often have to carry out. These are:
• communicating goals and expectations,
• explaining procedures,
• expressing understanding,
• motivating,
• warning, disciplining and setting boundaries,
• presenting and defending one’s position on a matter,
• explaining one’s values, attitude and approach as a leader,
• representing one’s team,
• negotiating.
In addition to practicing words and phrases that are commonly used in carrying out these tasks, attention will also be paid to strategies that can be used to communicate effectively. These strategies include analysing a communication situation, adapting one’s communication to meet the specific requirements of varying situations and taking repair actions in the face of miscommunication. |
