Lecturer: Dr. Debbie Coetzee-Lachmann
has more than twenty years’ experience in teaching business and academic English to students and professionals in South Africa, Belgium and Germany. Between June 2007 and July 2016 she held the position as head of the language center at the university, before changing to a position in the university’s division for staff and organizational development where she is responsible for international members of staff. As language and communication trainer and consultant, her work focuses on the challenges we face in terms of our communication and interaction in multicultural and multilingual academic and professional settings.

Content:
We all take on different roles in the course of our careers. We may change from being a team member to being the team leader, from having a position in academia to having one in industry or from being an employee to being an employer. Each role affects our professional relationships and the expectations our professional environment holds of us. To illustrate:
• Being promoted to head of a team may lead to unexpected conflicts with former colleagues.
• Industry sometimes requires a different set of professional values than academia does.
• Owning one’s own company instead of working for someone else usually has far-reaching consequences for one’s level of responsibility and autonomy.

These types of changes require an acute awareness of our roles and professional relationships and the ability to negotiate these openly and confidently.

This workshop offers you the opportunity to reflect about the ways in which you define your professional role and practice strategies with which you can refine this definition. We will also look at strategies you can use to communicate your role to your professional environment and ways in which you can negotiate roles, expectations and relationships – including ways to handle conflicts that may arise.
