Content:
Writing professional academic texts such as papers, dissertations, reports, proposals, etc. is vital for any researcher pursuing a Ph.D. or a scientific career. Yet, it is also a complex and often overwhelming task that requires a range of specific skills. The three writing modules deal with these skills from different perspectives and can be attended as a complete series, in any order, or independently.

This second module focuses on the structural organization of good writing in English. Mixing writing practice with analytical tasks, we will, first, discuss what the criteria for a well-structured text are and what is culturally specific about these criteria in English. Next, we are going to treat paragraphs as the essential building blocks of writing and ask how we can use them to develop a clear and useful outline and how data and ideas are best turned into a logically organized and, thus, readable text. Finally, we will examine how this can help the planning and production of a longer text such as a dissertation or other monograph.

In particular, we will cover the following topics:
• understanding the criteria for good structural organization in English;
• recognizing the role of paragraphs as units of thought in English texts;
• presenting data and ideas properly within paragraphs;
• mastering different types and functions of paragraphs;
• practicing outlining as a process of translating ideas into writing;
• opening and closing a text effectively and creatively;
• brainstorming, selecting, and clustering content pragmatically;
• developing a logical and coherent line of thought;
• achieving smooth transitions between paragraphs and throughout the text;
• applying the principles of good writing to the drafting of a dissertation.
