Beschreibung:
Writing professional academic texts such as papers, dissertations, reports, pro-posals, etc. is vital for any researcher pursuing a Ph.D. or a scientific career. Yet, it is also a complex and often overwhelming task that requires a range of specif-ic skills. The three writing modules deal with these skills from different perspec-tives and can be attended as a complete series, in any order, or independently.

This FIRST module focuses on the successful development of a research paper (or report) for publication. We will, on the one hand, analyze samples of how the different parts of a good paper need to be written in order to meet the expecta-tions of editors and reviewers and to have a strong impact on the academic community. On the other hand, we are going to discuss and practice how to best organize the process of writing – i.e., how to actually get started, how to efficient-ly plan the individual sections of a paper, and how to finally get your work pub-lished.

In particular, we will cover the following topics:
• starting the writing process and overcoming potential obstacles;
• defining the focus and objective of a research paper (or report);
• opening a paper and motivating your research convincingly;
• recognizing the overall storyline and conventions of a research paper;
• understanding the forms and functions of the different parts of a paper;
• developing professional outlines for Introductions;
• reviewing and referencing previous research adequately;
• providing useful explanations of the methods and results of your re-search;
• discussing your findings and concluding the research paper properly;
• writing powerful Abstracts and creating effective titles;
• managing the submission, review, and publication process.

This course is part of the interdisciplinary program ENGLISH+. The program addresses typical challenges for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers who want to (or have to) publish and present their work in English. It covers a range of special skills and competencies needed to write and communicate professionally in English and, thus, to become recognized by the international scientific community.

The list below shows the complete ENGLISH+ curriculum. It is divided into (1) three courses that, taken together, include all important aspects of academic writing, (2) three courses that focus on typical situations arising at conferences, as well as (3) an additional course for developing English grammar, vocabulary, and usage. All courses are taught at least once a year, and a certificate can be obtained after having completed a minimum of five different courses.
