In Englisch: This talk will discuss the challenges and the opportunities of writing about emotions in the premodern world. The nature of the evidence, mainly literary texts, requires correction for generic conventions and literary goals, whereas the long chronological span allows us to see both how a social emotion, such as pride, changes in response to political transformation and what retains cultural stability. The results of the investigation, in turn, allow for a reading of influential texts, such as Vergil’s Aeneid, that is more attuned to how the text engages with and represents the emotional landscape of its characters.
