Rethinking the Future of Higher Education: Decolonial Perspectives in Teaching

Workshop Recap from Göttingen: Yalız Akbaba and Constantin Wagner engaged participants in discussions on decolonial perspectives and the futures of higher education. Insights, reflection, and exchange on opportunities and challenges in teaching and research.

On February 13, 2026,  Prof. Dr. Yalız Akbaba (Philipps University Marburg) and  Prof. Dr. Constantin Wagner (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz) visited the University of Göttingen to hold a workshop on possible futures of higher education, in cooperation with the university’s  Center for Teaching and Learning, the Decolonize University Göttingen network, and  FuturMig. The workshop leaders bring extensive experience in designing teaching and university structures from discrimination-sensitive and decolonial perspectives. Following an exercise in which participants reflected on their own perspectives and positionality, Akbaba and Wagner presented findings from the project “Postmigratory Perspectives on Political Education,” shared their own experiences, and encouraged participants to discuss the possibilities and limits of implementing decolonial perspectives in their own disciplines and teaching. The workshop was funded by the State of Lower Saxony as part of the FuturMig research project.
