56 students accepted the invitation from the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) to attend the first Migration Theme Day at the University of Osnabrück. The FuturMig Future Lab participated with a workshop. “Out of the Box: The Future Moves Us!” combined museum education approaches with questions about values and the prerequisites for a just future. Angela Steinhardt and Silvan Meenga (Museum Friedland) as well as Yasmin Dreessen (CeMig/University of Göttingen) invited students from three different 10th-grade classes to explore together biographies linked to flight, migration, or upheaval. Before that, however, the students engaged in a tactile and associative exploration of objects linked to these life stories. Later in the workshop, the students were also able to share experiences of upheavals and events in their own lives using objects they had chosen themselves. With this foundation for building a sense of community in mind, they then addressed the question: “What does it take to create a just future for everyone?” The students then compiled values and concepts that served to inspire concrete ideas for implementation. The workshop was funded by the State of Lower Saxony as part of the Lower Saxony Science Initiative “Futures of Migration.”
