This lecture course is intended to provide a survey of the development of English literature and culture from ca. 1780 to 1840. The period, which covers the time of the French Revolution as well as the phenomenon called ‘romanticism’, decisively changed the course of English (and European) cultural history. I recommend reading the following texts: Edmund Burke, Reflections on the Revolution in France; Thomas Paine, Rights of Man; Ann Radcliffe, The Italian; Charles Robert Maturin, Melmoth the Wanderer; Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice; Sir Walter Scott, Waverley; as well as poems by William Wordsworth, S. T. Coleridge, Lord Byron, P. B. Shelley and John Keats.
