Beschreibung

In this biweekly course, we will look at a variety of screen adaptations based on 19th-century classic novels. Using elements of adaptation studies and film analysis as the basis of our “reading” of the films, we will explore the following questions: Why is classic literature adapted again and again? Which cultural capital do film adaptations posses in comparison to their literary originals? How are notions of gender, class, and love updated in the process of adaptation? Which role do aspects like casting, costume, and setting play? How does an adaptation influence our subsequent rereading of the source text? Why are novels from the so-called Long Nineteenth Century such a popular source for films?

During the course of the semester we will read three novels, both British and American and watch examples of corresponding adaptations.
Please note several anomalies concerning this course:

• We will meet for four hours in a biweekly rhythm, so please avoid overlapping with other courses.
• Unlike other V1 courses, this one will not be available for the I module!
• Term papers for this course will be due on the 10th August, not the 30th September! Unfortunately, it will not be possible to extend the deadline.

Further information concerning the primary and secondary literature as well as the movie adaptations will be uploaded soon.
