This course will offer an introduction to the basic ideas of Construction Grammar (CxG) and how these relate to questions and problems of language variation and change. We will look at some concrete change phenomena from historical and present-day Englisches and how these can be modeled in a CxG framework.
Prepatory reading includes Hoffmann & Trousdale's Handbook of Construction Grammar (OUP, 2013). Traugott & Trousdale. Constructionalization and constructional change (OUP, 2013), Hilpert Construction Grammar and its application to English (EUP, 2019) , Hilpert Constructional Change in English (CUP, 2013) and Cousse Grammaticalization meets Construction Grammar (JBP, 2018) and Burridge and Bergs Understanding Language Change (TF, 2017) Many of these titles are available as electronic copies in the library.
This course is available as L3 (5LP, term paper or oral exam), F1 (5LP, term paper or Studiennachweis), and F5 (5LP, term paper), and Sprache in Europa (term paper 4Lp, or Studiennachweis 3 LP)
