Beschreibung

The seminar will look at three variants of narrative prose written by U.S.-American authors during the second half of the nineteenth century. Realism, naturalism and regionalism appear to be distinct movements in terms of their underlying concepts, but they also share common formal concerns. Looking at examples from all three fields, we will discuss similarities and differences, honing our skills in identifying, comparing and distinguishing principal elements of style, composition, plot and representation in comparatively short prose works.
All primary readings will be taken from
The Portable American Realism Reader (1997) which is available in paperback (recommended) or as a Kindle book.
