Beschreibung

This course examines the change processes occurring in various countries’ higher education sectors resulting from intentional adaptations to universities’ governance structures and guiding ideologies, as well as reactions to societal events that guide future directions. Different logics—scientific, commercial, ethical, political—have always existed in higher education governance processes. How these logics are balanced, interpreted, and enacted, vary depending on the relationship between higher education and society. In current times a variety of factors (i.e. the ‘knowledge society’, ‘post-truth’ politics, COVID-19) have impacted higher education institutions and the science they produce, providing them with a more central and influential role in many democratic societies. As such, the resources, attention and demands—and overall, the relationship to society—evolves. Higher education institutions, in general, and professors/scholars, in particular, are engaging with new forms of governance, an increasing number of actors (and their interests), as well as fulfilling the ‘traditional’ work of teaching and research. How institutions and individuals navigate the emerging ‘new’ relationship with society depends on a number of factors. In this course we will look how various intentional and unintentional actions impact universities and scholars’ work. Topics such as contingent academic jobs, commercialization of research, entrepreneurial faculty, competition for funding, new public management, university rankings, internationalization and politicalization of research will be discussed.
