Beschreibung

This year, the course "Migration Regimes and Space" will focus on "international student migration" (ISM) and will be offered in cooperation with 5 partner institutes of the “European Master in Migration Studies” (EuMIGS) network.

EuMIGS is a network of master programmes in ten European countries and offers students enrolled in any of the participating institutes to spend up to one year at another institute and to take part in joint course offers and events. This is the first joint seminar offered by the network under the coordination of the University of Osnabrück and with funding by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Students and researchers from the following partner institutes will participate in the course: Neuchatel, Lyon, A Coruna, Linköping and Salzburg.

The total number of participating students will be about 25, thus only about 5 students will be selected from Osnabrück to participate in the course. We are still determining the selection criteria with the other partners, and will announce them shortly.

Please also note that the course will only take place in the beginning of next year. The precise dates are yet to be determined, but probably the seminar will take place in February and March. As the seminar will be taking place over a short period, it will be quite condensed, i.e. requiring quite substantial amounts of work during this period.

The course will consist of three blocks. First, students will be introduced to the research field of “international student migration” (ISM) through a series of lectures by international experts on the topic and a joint reading of key literature. Different perspectives (e.g. sociological, geographical, ethnographic) and aspects will be covered (e.g. gender and race and ISM; policies of ISM, spaces of ISM, ISM during Covid-19 times). Second, students will conduct small research projects in collaboration with their international peers. Third, students will be asked to present their research in written and oral form to an international audience. The best projects will be selected for a presentation at the annual IMISCOE conference in July 2021 in Luxembourg.

Even though the course will be interdisciplinary, there will be a focus on the spatialities of student migration and knowledge production. Students taking this class and wanting to write a term paper connected to the course will have to take an explicitly geographical approach to the theme.
