Beschreibung

This master course (which may be taken as a sequel to the introduction to law and literature from last semester) will read three novels from different periods of U.S.-American literature and discuss them in their legal, historical, and critical contexts.
The following primary texts will be discussed:
James F. Cooper. The Ways of the Hour. (1852)
Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird (1960)
William Gaddis. A Frolic of His Own (1994)
Students who sign up for the course have to read all three novels in advance before classes start. This is a necessary commitment for attendance and participation in the course.
Secondary reading material will be made available in the course folder in advance as well as a more detailed schedule with specific reading assignments for class discussions.
The course will be accompanied by a series of guest lectures (Monday evenings 18-20) with individual sessions on Tuesday mornings scheduled as workshops with our guest lecturers. Students signing up for the course for credit will be asked to attend the lectures as well - session time will be accommodated accordingly.
