Beschreibung

In this course we will read and discuss texts that articulate or address some of the major developments in modern Anglo-American literary and cultural theory. We will approach this diverse field of enquiry exemplarily by examining the debates on cultural distinction and on the role of literature in this context. We will also take stock of the most influential arguments in the 20th and 21st century on the questions of representation (both in a literary/esthetic and in a political sense), taking into account the positions advanced by cultural studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, and New Historicism.
In order to take and enjoy this class, you should be willing to read, analyze, and discuss theoretical and critical texts. The required readings will be made available online on Stud.IP before our first class. Please check Stud.IP regularly for updates, announcements, and changes.

General requirements: Regular attendance, active participation, group work, in-class oral presentation (about 20 minutes), and willingness to read theoretical texts. Please come prepared to participate actively in classroom discussions.
Requirements for certificate: All of the above, periodic homework, and term paper (about 12 pages).
Presentations: Please note that all the participants will need to read and prepare each of the texts mentioned in the syllabus. However, one or two participants will summarize and comment on the text in the form of an oral presentation of about 20 minutes which will then serve as a basis for classroom discussion. A schedule for the presentations will be circulated in the first session.
