Beschreibung

Public space, and especially urban public space, by tradition has been the stage and sounding board for modern societies. While notions of contested spaces and the right to the city are being discussed, collective action from Tahrir to Standing Rock has transformed both spaces and communities in recent years.
The seminar takes place at the intersection of urbanism, literature, and art. In the frame of the seminar, we will look closely at artistic expression of and in urban space in various forms and media, and the convergence of art and the public as a “primary site of image-making and space-shaping in our cultural economy” (Hal Foster).
The seminar offers its participants artistic, literary, sociological, mindfulness and philosophical approaches to explore how urban space can be experienced, read and told. Through different formats that include experimental walks, we will map spheres and impediments of public space and its citizens' engagement and the changing modes of representation within the current process of global urbanization. Public space as sites of revolutionary articulation will be of interest for us in this context as much as community efforts of placemaking and “social sculpturing” (Joseph Beuys).
The interdisciplinary seminar is intended for those students who are willing to engage in lively discussions and experimental research activities. A reading list will be provided before the seminar, the participants are expected to read the core texts and prepare the seminar through a couple of individual tasks communicated in advance. Participation of all sessions including the experimental walks is mandatory. Instead of a term paper, participants are asked to create a photo- and/or written essay or another form of reflection of the course in accordance with the lecturer.

If the capacities allow for it, this course is open for advanced Bachelor's students who have finished their V1 modules and can be recognized in the elective modules (Wahlbereiche). Master's students have priority over Bachelor's students, however.
