This block seminar is open for all students in the institute. The language of instruction will be in English.

What holds societies together? What pulls them apart? Many scholars have described the current political climate in many Western democracies as creating a divided society, polarized by politicized issues. People are being divided into opposing camps, categorized as “us” vs. “them”, “somewheres” vs. “nowheres”, as “winners or losers of globalization”, and as “left behind”, amongst others. All of these descriptions try to capture the growing trend in established liberal democracies that citizens are not just less connected to each other, but feel anger, resentment or even hatred for those who do not hold their same point of view. Various perspectives and evidence are used to show how societies divide: economic (a significant gap between the rich and the poor), cultural factors (holding traditional vs. progressive values on current topics), political (the failure of equal representation in government). In this course we will explore different theories/perspectives on why and how societies are have historically and currently are becoming more polarized.
